We went for a Sunday drive to one of my favourite places in Cape Town, Simon’s Town. Mr and I love it so much that we’ve often contemplated moving there. Simon’s Town is home to Boulder’s Beach, where you’d find African penguins waddling along the shore, and Mineral World – Scratch Patch. The view from The Scratch Patch is absolutely arresting.
It was a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon and we were so happy to capitalise on the good weather. We’ve been to The Scratch Patch before with Madam and a friend, the Little One was far too young to enjoy the experience. This time it was the Little One’s turn to experience the fun.
They do not charge an entrance fee, but you can buy a plastic ziplock bag to collect your favourite crystals. The price ranges between R18 for a small bag to R100 for a large bag ($1.15 – $6.36 or £0.79 – £4.39). The crystal sizes range from small to large. They are perfect to keep in the home or to make jewellery with.
The Little One loved sitting in the cave. We spent most of our time here. He adored shifting the stones around. This came as a surprise to us, because he hates all sensory activities. He took a while to warm up, but he was fully commited once he was used to the stones.
Then he decided to toss the stones and realised that it was far more fun than shifting them around.
He enjoyed throwing the stones into the river, after Mr showed him how. I could hardly tear him away from this activity. We spent two hours at the Scratch Patch. We visited Mineral World after The Scratch Patch, where we purchased a few pre-drilled stones for jewellery making and browsed around at their many gorgeous jewellery pieces, geodes and fossils for sale.
My favourite part of the excursion was seeing adults rummaging for crystals with more fervour than the children. It was a great outing for young and old. We’ll definitely be back again and again.

Thank you :). I just realised that we hardly take photos together, but Mr played photographer on this excursion. Your outing sounds marvelous and special. I’d love to stargaze with him when he’s older.

It feel like weeks since we connected, Lindsay. That can’t possibly be true, can it? Your excursion reminded me of the time we visited a tourmaline mine with our home schooling group, and spent time sifting and sorting the dirt and rocks, hunting for bits of the mineral. It was like a treasure hunt. My son seemed to enjoy any new experience, especially if he gained new information. 🙂

It feels like it’s been forever! The internet has been sketchy here due to upgrades so I’m not getting around to much blogging things lately :(. That excursion must have been so exciting for the children. We have something similar called the West Coast Fossil Park. My mom has been there with her school children, but I haven’t been there yet.

I hope so. He doesn’t like the texture of sand. He tiptoes on the beach till he reaches the water. He will outgrow this, hopefully 🙂

How beautiful Lindsay. I have never heard to the scratch patch. I have no idea when we will be visiting CT, but trust me I would love to check it out. Your pic’s are amazing and the scenery is superb. CT is a great place to be 🙂 .
