How I feel when I’m putting my toddler to sleep

15i4vj.jpg

There used to be a time when the Little One loved to nap. He would nap on time for a few hours and I was able to get everything done in peace. Those days are long gone!

Now my son puts up a fight every nap time and bed time. He gets really grumpy when he’s tired and knows that he has to sleep, but he just doesn’t want to. This leads to one cranky child and one exasperated mom.

Me: Would you like to take a nap?

Him: Hell no! (he didn’t say that, but he gave me that look)

So I grab him and hold him.

Then he starts to say all the new words he learned this week in an attempt to be as cute as possible so that I will let him go.

Him: Octagon, apple, elephant, lion, I love you.

So now I start holding him tighter and he reacts like this and just as I think it can’t get any worse…

He starts yelling “Jesus!”at the top of his lungs.

Me: Jesus can’t help you get out of this one.

I can’t wait for the sweet sleeping days to come again. They do come around again, right?

  1. I had three who fought me tooth and nail about taking naps. But the fourth one, my middle daughter, would come up and say “will you put K**** to bed?” She knew if I put one of them down, the others followed. She still loves to take naps…in her thirties! šŸ™‚

  2. My eldest was a breeze. It was bedtime. We’d read a story. We’d kiss him goodnight while a lullaby played on a music box. At least I think that is how it went. I may be suffering from some selective memory loss, but if I am, is that really so bad? My youngest, however, has decreed that bedtime is code for Tasmanian devil on speed time. He doesn’t destroy anything per se (at least not usually), but he runs loops around us and has the ability elude our arms and get around obstacles like an octopus.

    1. I am very familiar with “Mom Brain”. Haha. I’m hoping to have a child like your oldest next time around. šŸ™‚ I have a similar situation to your youngest at the moment. Is it getting any easier as he grows?

  3. He might be a little too young yet to understand this, but you might try telling him that most of his growing happens while he’s sleeping. He wants to grow big and strong, right? Of course, you might find the perfect way to help him understand that. If he sees sleeping as his friend, he might not mind so much. ā¤

    1. I’m so glad you can relate. We sleep trained him a while ago, but he had a terrible case of bronchitis and it ruined everything. I’m hoping to start it up again. We have a video monitor, but I hardly used it. Your strategy sounds interesting šŸ™‚

  4. i remember when i would feel really like the saddest creature when i had to nap whether i wanted or not, or my escapades of p,laying in bed and until i would put toothpaste on my eyes to prove i slept except i wasn’t a toddler lol then school days came and i was exhausted most of the times and would go to bed by myself and now in my twenties with the craziest schedule of a medical student i would give the world to have a 5 min nap, but no chance! i hope your little one comes around but i absolutely know how he feels !

  5. Oh,my gosh that’s funny! My youngest, as a baby, woke up at 5 a.m. to start his day. By the time he was ready for a nap the older boy was waking up. And, of course, when that one was ready to go down the little guy was waking up.
When he’s a teenager you’ll have to use large quantities of water to get him up.
